Veseyans 1xv put their league campaign back on track this week following a poor performance last week. A much changed side travelled to Willenhall, where it's fair to say the pitch conditions did not suit the V's style of play.
V's kicked off and as with other games went immediately on the front foot. After a series of plays Matt Gillick broke through the centre, he then chipped the fullback and Josh Groome followed up to score with just 2 minutes gone. Following this core Willenhall had their only meaningful foray into the V's 22 and with some strong running and poor V's tacking created space for their winger to post an immediate reply in the left corner, this was followed by the touchline conversion.
This though was the end of the scoring opportunities for the home side with V's dominating the rest of the game and bagging the try bonus point before half time with a further try from Groome and a brace from Darius Paszowski; all 3 converted by Matt Gillick along with a first half penalty. Half time score 7 - 29 to the V's.
V's started the second half a brightly as the first and notched up two quick tries from bulldozing no.8 Courtney Cummings and Matt Turner who ran the perfect support line following a break by Dan Hemming. Gillick converted both. V's then went to sleep a little compounded by some uncharacteristic handling errors meant the next and final score game in the last minute of the game when Dan Hemming chipped over the Willenhall back line and chased his own kick to score in the corner. The conversion was missed. This left final score 7-48 to the V's.
Special mention goes to Luke Richards who made his 1xv debut having played Colts last year and Man of the Match Jon Fellows who came off his wing often and found the space to carve open the Willenhall defence and give the try scoring pass.
