COLTS MATCH REPORT: Veseyans 12 - 33 Bromyard

Despite all the recent rain Veseyans welcomed visitors Bromyard to recommence their league campaign on a sunny but blustery afternoon. With the home team choosing to play up the hill and into the wind first half, the need for good accurate game management was essential and for the first 10 minutes, they controlled the game well. Unfortunately, an error when a ball wasn’t taken cleanly in our own 22 gifted the visitors their first points and the lead 0-7. Then, direct from the kick-off Bromyard decided to run the ball back and a good move to the edge of our defensive line allowed the visitor's winger to run in from the halfway line, 0-14. What happened next was to be down to character and the home side went straight back into the fight and built 20 minutes of sustained pressure with once or twice the wrong decision or poor execution prevented us from getting our first points on the board. Then with just a little over 5 minutes left of the half 2 phases or really quick ball allowed Max Powell to find a weak shoulder and touch down to bring the scores to 7-14. With only minutes left to play this would have been a good result especially considering the conditions but from a speculative kick forward we again failed to field the ball and the ensuing chaser nudged the ball over the tray and dotted it down to make it 7-21 at half time.

With the conditions and down the hill this was not an insurmountable points difference but a good start was essential. Once again we started well and built good pressure but after 10 minutes of not breaching their line they cleared for territory and we once again failed to secure the ball and from the resulting scrum in our 22 their No8 picked and drove over in the corner, 7-26. Once again, the home team showed great character but couldn’t make in-roads into the visitors lead, and as invariably happens a lucky charge down from one of our clearing kicks hit the post, and bounced up into the hands of the player to score the simplest of tries. As what has become our signature for most of the season we didn’t let the score impact us and played the rest of the game camped in the visitors half. Patrick Beasley rumbled over for a well deserved try and a great chase from Euan Neale at the death just failed to secure a final consolation try... Bromyard ran out deserved winners 12-33.

Once again the character and desire everyone showed for each other was outstanding. The never say die attitude and they want to keep playing was fantastic but a special mention must go out to Eli Nix who must have tackled every opposition player at least twice!!! Another game of ‘what could have been’, 5 tries conceded but 4 from our own mistakes and the scoreline could have been very different. Anyway, back to cup rugby next week so lets dust our selves down and get back on the winning road....well done everyone.
