On a wet afternoon with showers forecast Veseyans Colts travelled to Camp Hill for an expected difficult match in testing conditions, they weren’t disappointed. Once again Veseyans started with really good intensity and the game was fairly well matched in the opening exchanges but a fortunate bounce of the ball gifted Camp Hill their first try which they converted to take a 7-0 lead after 10 minutes.
However, as in previous weeks more poor execution across the back line gave Camp Hill excellent field position and they quickly turned it into their second try and 12-0 lead. The team then lost their captain and talisman Max Powell which meant a reshuffle and Nathan Perry moved from thee wing into the No 8 slot and really energised our forward pack for the remainder of the half. Camp Hill were now starting to apply continuous pressure and the penalty count against us was mounting resulting in an easy 3 points to extend their lead to 15-0. Then, on the brink of half time another mistake and a poor attempt to clear the ball from our own 5M line resulted in a charge down and a walk under the posts for 22-0.
The second half started considerably better for Veseyans and a change to a more simplistic game plan allowed us to get good front ball and start to build some pressure for ourselves. But once again some poor kicking allowed Camp Hill to break from their own half and get their bonus point try for 27-0. Undeterred, Veseyans showed some real resolve and took the game straight back to the home side which resulted in them having a player in the sin bin and Cam Longmore driving over from 5M for a well deserved team try. Having used all our substitutions the pace and physicality started to show and we lost our concentration from the restart to allow the home side to respond immediately with another try to extend their lead to 34-5.
The game continued to ebb and flow with Camp Hill working a well taken No8 pick from the base of the scrum for the final score of the match and a well deserved 41-5 win. That said, Veseyans finished the game in Camp Hills 22 and Nathan Perry just failed to take the final pass with the try line at his mercy for what would have capped his Man of the Match performance with another try.
Once again, the commitment, attitude and desire was outstanding and Veseyans started to show a game plan which will evolve over the coming weeks and will no doubt produce the victory that all the effort and hard work they are putting in deserves.
